Goa... again.
February 2007

From Hospet and Hampi I wanted to go south.  I could either go through Bangalore again or through Goa.  I ended up choosing Goa.  It's a big area, so I decided to see a bit more of it.  I had also heard that the train ride from Hospet to Goa was quite scenic.  It was, but...  I didn't manage to get any photos to show that.

Most of my time was spent in long walks, though most of the photos here are of Goa Carnival at Panaji.  Was Carnival here anything incredible?  Well possibly not, but yet another interesting contrast in India.  There are so many.  Such a big country with so many different beliefs and customs.  I guess one of the highlights for me was the number of bands on the floats?!?  Good to see working musicians considering the amount of pre-recorded music used at such events these days.  This being India, sound systems were large and blasting away at full volume.  Odd that I took so many photos I think.  There is always a parade or procession of some sort going on everywhere in India it seems.

Back at the beach, I encountered many Europeans on "spiritual journeys."  There were perhaps too many here for my tastes, and more later in Kerela.  Some were respectful of local cultures and customs, while others seemed to want to make no contact with India whatsoever.  Everyone has a different India experience.   Some of the young Israelis talked about the cheap drinks and drugs, some of the Europeans about "finding themselves" and spirituality.  Many of them didn't explore much beyond their own backgrounds.  It seemed odd to me, but once again, it is all part of India.  I realize that my choices seem odd to others, and to each his own.  One of the great things about India I suppose is that somehow there is room for all of this and more.

Ok, enough incoherent text.....

Once again to show my general disdain of video, I present this little bit...  Little bits of Carnival.  Skip it and go to the photos.
