Hampi and Hospet
February 2007

So Hampi is the attraction and Hospet is the nearby town for accommodation.  Actually many stay in Hampi, but it seems that I am attracted to towns that others avoid?  Of course on the day of a "bandh" the streets of Hospet were avoided by tourists and locals alike.  It was the day of the scheduled general strike protesting the Cauvery Tribunal's decision about water rights, and I believe was observed in all of Karnataka?  Everything was closed, initially giving Hospet the feel of a ghost town.  The large and empty tourist hotels, many unfinished added to this.  Despite my observations, there must be visitors here sometimes, as a few of the empty hotels were in the process of expansion.  Though there not being much of anything going on in Hospet, I had a good time.  Can't help it...

Of course the reason to be in the area was Hampi, containing the ruins of the once magnificent Vijayanagar Empire.  It is yet another UNESCO World Heritage site, which I have found is not really a great indicator of what I'll think of a place.  Anyway, the ruins around Hampi were a thrill for me, for both the ruins and the surrounding boulder strewn terrain.  I covered the site in one long day, though in retrospect I think I should have taken two or more?  It was quite a bit of walking, even by my standards...

Video:  What could possibly outshine the ruins at Hampi?  Well...  Some monkeys using the list of donors as a slide maybe?
